Quickened
suzōopoieō
In light of yesterday’s mediation on
regeneration, let us consider a related word, which also
appears only twice in the NT:
Eph 2:4 But God, being
rich in mercy, because of His great love with which
He loved us,
Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in
our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by
grace you have been saved
Col 2:13 When
you were dead in your transgressions and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive
together with Him, having forgiven us all our
transgressions,
In Ephesians, the Greek
suzōopoieō (G4806) actually translates the
entire clause "(made you alive) quickened us
together," which literally means "to make one alive
together with another."
The verb is also in the aorist tense showing
that at a once-for-all point in the past we were made alive
"together with Christ," that is, in connection with him,
associated with him in newness of life.
In other words, the same power that raised
him from the grave is the same power that has given us life.
Think of it! The very same infinite power that could revive the
physically dead also revives the spiritually
dead.
A crucial truth to understand here is the picture of our
identification with Christ. We need to recognize a wondrous
progression:
• We have been crucified with Christ
(Rom_6:6; Gal_2:20).
• We died with Christ (Rom_6:8; 2Ti_2:11).
• We were buried with Christ (Rom_6:4; Col_2:12).
• Now we have been given new life with Christ
(quickened).
Rom 5:21 so
that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would
reign through righteousness to eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Scriptures for Study: Read and
meditate on the verses in the progression listed above. Reflect
on what you used to be without Christ and what you are
now.
